Textbook: ELA – Imagine It * Students will read three chapter books this year.
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I am delighted to teach your child the fifth-grade ELA (English Language Arts) curriculum this year. This is my 22nd year as an educator with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). I am a product of DPSCD schools and enjoy working with children. I am currently in school at Central Michigan University continuing my education at the graduate level.
Students are expected to participate in small collaborative group settings, whole group discussions, one-on-one with their peers and myself in an effort to gain a deeper knowledge of the class content. We will focus on instructional strategies that will engage and enhance the students’ abilities to recall information, comprehend various literary genres, understand and apply vocabulary, read fluently with expression and clarity, and effectively use an array of writing styles across all content areas. Our goal is to advance each student a minimum of one grade level by the end-of-the-school year.
Each student is expected to participate in every class activity, complete assignments before or on the designated due date, and be willing to step out-of-the-box with innovative ideas, discussions, inquiries, and answers. Students should take ownership of their learning as we progress through the year. They will develop questions, plan inquiries, apply concepts and tools, evaluate sources, and use evidence found in the text to support their writing.
DPSCD has a new policy to address parent concerns. Please adhere to the proper protocol if you have a concern.
- Review the syllabus for individual school and classroom rules.
- Make an appointment to discuss your concern with me.
- If we cannot resolve the issue please complete a Parent Concern form by email at [email protected], or by calling (313) 596-3800 and leave a message.
- Concerns not resolved by the Parent and Community Liaison should be addressed to the Assistant Superintendent for your local school’s constellation. Provide any documentation you may have of incidents should they need further attention.
- Disciplinary actions must follow due process according to the Student Code of Conduct. If you desire to appeal the outcome, you must follow the District’s appeal process as outlined in the district’s Student Code of Conduct Policy booklet.
- Come to class prepared with all supplies and homework completed.
- Participate in class activities.
- Listen when others are talking and follow directions.
- Respect EVERYONE and ALL property at ALL TIMES. Carryout random acts of kindness.
- ALWAYS do your BEST!
- Knowledge is POWER!
- You will be celebrated!
- We can move faster.
- Happiness is knowing you gave your BEST!
